I am no expert on cartoons but I do enjoy a good illustration. Tom Gauld is a Scottish cartoonist and illustrator, with some really nice and dark drawings.

Happy 2009! I hope you all had a great holiday and start to the new year. To start off 2009 at Oh Joy...here are a handful of my current favorite images. Balloons seem to be everywhere lately {they're the new mustache!}, so here's a little ode to things that are round, floaty, and cheerful!

Here's my monday morning wish: I would like an etsy-like site that would allow me to have a nice designed online store to sell all my designy stuff (purses, jewlery, cameras etc) that's too nice to just give away. I just *can't* get myself to list them on Ebay or Craigslist. I have some really nice designy stuff that would instantly look crap on Ebay and I can't handle the weirdness of people showing up at my door (Craigslist) and starting to haggle after you negotiated a price... So, I was thinking if etsy would create an off-shoot site that would allow to sell personal things, that would be fabulous, no?! Thoughts?

"The trick is to build visual layers, just as one might do with a painting"My new Asian-style kitchen has heightened my love for spaces designed with an ethnic vibe. This love grew even more when I came across the portfolio of designer Stephen Falcke. His work has taken him around the globe - South Africa, France, Australia, Greece, Israel...and these gorgeous locations have clearly inspired his designs. "I derive a lot of my inspiration from nature and think of my style as a melting pot of various worldwide cultures."

I am thrilled to announce the first CreativeMornings of 2009: On January 9th, 2009, Anjeli Sharma Sr. Strategist at Naked, will talk on how Packaging plays a crucial role in the communications mix, acting as the core essence of the brand, both on shelf and after purchase. Once at shelf, the package has less than three seconds to grab people’s attention, amidst a slew of competition, shelf talkers and sales prices. Despite it’s importance, the package becomes a means of slapping on extensive messaging, leaving it ineffective and confusing to people. This talk will explore the role of packaging design in communications planning and why it is so important to get it right!
The event is being generously hosted by Naked at 96 Greene Street #3 in Soho and opens up at 8:30am with the 10 minute talk starting at 9:00am, following a 20 minute disussion. Our virtual guest of the month will be Joey Roth, mastermind behind the fabulous Sorapot.
Interested in attending? Make sure to r.s.v.p via email as there are only 30 spots available. We are filling up quickly. Please tell us your name and what industry you're in.
Can't attend? Don't worry, here's a list of our scheduled 2009 speakers: Matthew Waldman, Armin Vit, Allegra Burnette (Creative Director of Digital Media at The Museum of Modern Art) and Hillman Curtis.

i love catching a design studio right before they move to manufacture their work. this weekend i heard from david horan of hundredstendunits in coventry, uk and i was instantly smitten with his studio’s simple, modern furniture. along with his business partners matt bassett and tom nelson, david has designed a lovely line of contemporary furniture and and home accessories. i can’t wait to see them produced and out on the market, but until then you can check out their work here. as always, if you’re interested in a piece, you can always contact the designers to talk about a custom production or when their work will be near you.
